Reverse Therapy would consider FMS and CFS/ME to be different expressions of HPA disorder. In this condition the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis sets of an alarm response which drives the body’s systems to exhaustion. Blood is shunted away from the brain and the gut to the muscles, which are overworked. This alarm response has been generated in the emotional brain (limbic system) as a result of missed emotional cues or messages, which the body sent to warn, guide or protect when we were in a difficult situation. If we ignore, don’t notice or override these messages, the body views this as a threat. It is as if the “fear, flight, fight” mechanism is stuck in the “on” position.
